At our last tasting we welcomed Steph, from Celcius Coffee. It's 100% organic and 100% fair trade and it's won quite a few medals at the New Zealand Coffee Awards and it was jolly nice - especially with Tasman Bay Foods cookies - what a lovely way to spend an afternoon trying cookies and coffee!

Wild Mushroom Risotto

1 Risotto mix

1 tbsp olive oil or butter

1 small onion finely chopped

4 cloves chopped garlic

800ml water or half white wine/eater

½ cup cream

1 Risotto mix

4 cloves chopped garlic

800ml water or half white wine/eater

½ cup cream

 Grated (parmesan) cheese

Heat oil or butter in pot. Add onions and soften. Add rice and dried mushrooms and garlic. Sauté for a minute then add herb salt and water or wine/water. Stir well for three minutes. Put the lid on and simmer for 20 minutes on low heat stirring occasionally. Season and add cream and top with cheese.

The store was very busy with this tasting by Matteo Bordini and Raffaello Sirri. MilkDrop are a local Nelson business which began in 2012 by two Italian friends. The Mozzarella proves very popular as does the Gorgonzola.

Havoc Farms Pork - Claire from Havoc Farm took us through this tasting and not only does the bacon, chorizo, ham, sausages and steaks taste great but the pigs are treated very well. 

 

  • Pigs are outside, free to display natural behavior with plenty to eat and drink and frolic at will
  • No antibiotics or growth promotants
  • Good healthy diet of locally grown grain with a few added ingredients such as garlic and cider vinegar
  • Weaning at six to eight weeks rather than the industry standard of three weeks
  • No sow stalls

Hayley from Gather Girl is the creator of the delicious coconut pots – one of the creamiest yoghurts on the shelves. Great for dairy-free diets or if you just crave something different from the norm. Gather Girl’s Ruby Chai proved very popular at the tasting – a bespoke caffeine-free rooibos drink, a healthy and refreshing alternative to coffee.

Local producer Emma from the Green Collective showed us 101 ways to use their very clever Goodie Bags, Loot Bags and their new product - Spruce dishcloths. Emma says: “Reduce, reuse and recycle has always been one of our mottos.  Let’s add re-purpose, re-fresh and re-create and you start to get a sense of how we see the world and it’s possibilities".

This was a very popular tasting for those who ever really wondered what GF was all about or maybe if you had a family member or a friend who was GF. Tasters tried our GF cookies, muffins, breads, pikelets and more – all made from our product lines available at MCS.

Sue cooked up a storm with the following: Salmon tartare, no-machine Ricotta Gnocchi and Arrabiata Sauce, No-knead  Bread, Fish Stew and to finish Hazelnut Torte. Many of us enjoyed the afternoon learning and took home some new ideas and some delicious treats. Watch this space for another cooking demo nearer Christmas.

The Wangapeka Dairy tasting took us on a journey through their range of cheeses. Mild-mannered bries and camemberts through to the cheddars and to the creamy and aromatic blues. They shared how the cheeses are produced and cared for until they are brought to the peak of perfection and ready to be eaten.
